Dearest May Louise,
Had a grand time pouring tea at Miss Mann’s -- didn’t I feel by though serving all the sophomores and freshmen who came to call. Only I think it’s no easy job to manage alas, [hol], tea, sugar, spoons, hot water, and cake, and do the whole business by yourself. I was sort of scared, but I guess the tea was all right. Afterwards Miss Mann took me to Smith’s for dinner and gave me a beautiful feed. s


All Friday and Saturday I worked hard. The thing I’m interested in just now is Francis Bacon’s “Advancement of Learning.” Have you ever read it? I’m crazy about it.
This morning Charles Wagner preached in chapel and afterwards he told some stories in Senior Parlor. I think there’s something very interesting about him -- I imagine he would show off to better advantage here, where he wouldn’t be afraid to let himself, his unconventional self, go, among a lot of young things,


than at the Contemporary Club. If a man has anything in him at all he is sure to find great and very intelligent sympathy in a Vassar audience. The little stories he told were charming! I took Dr Harley and Miss Hadley to the parlor with me. Miss Hadley looks just like the pictures of Jane Austin -- such a delicate fine sensitive face, white skin, and rosy cheeks, black hair parted and worn high. She was so appreciative -- instructors you know can’t come into the parlor unless specially asked by a senior -- I was so glad I’d happened to meet her and thought of asking her. I’ve never had her in class, she teaches history, and was new here last year so she doesn’t know many people. I think some of the instructors here appreciate the attentions of a senior quite as much as freshmen do -- the ones who are new and a bit shy. Poor things!
It is snowing and blowing as hard as it can outdoors, and somehow it doesn’t make me feel communicative to people or to paper -- but I’m thinking of you all the same. Too bad Pearl had to go away. My ankle is perfectly all right now.
