JAMES LUKENS McCONAUGHY 1887 - 1948 The Faculty of Vassar College wish to record in their minutes the sorrow and regret they feel upon the death of Governor James L. McConaughy within his term as a trustee of Vassar College. From his range of experience in education, as professor at Bowdoin and Dartmouth Colleges and as president at Knox College and Wesleyan University, he brought keen understanding and sympathy to bear upon his Vassar duties. He never imposed upon the curriculum or administration any preconceived system or solution, but approached each pro- blem with fresh discrimination and fine judg- ment. Even in this last year when he was so fully occupied with affairs of state as the governor of Connecticut he found time to attend the meetings of the Trustee Committee on Faculty and Studies where his advice and experience were greatly appreciated. The whole Vassar community, as well as the Faculty will feel the loss of his generous services on behalf of the College, and those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him will feel they have lost a valued friend as well. Respectfully submitted, Agnes R. Claflin George S. Dickinson Mary Evelyn Wells XII - 232
