Biographical Note
Charlotte Brate (1890-1967) was born in Albany, N.Y., and was the daughter of a printer and publisher. After she graduated from Vassar in 1912, Miss Brate continued her studies at the Art Student's League, the New York School of Social Work, and Alfred University. She supported herself by teaching painting, pottery, and sculpture in private schools and in classes she organized herself. In 1928 her children's book, The Pony Tree, was published by Stokes.
Shortly thereafter her art work became secondary to her interest in the reformation of the Christian church along pacifist lines. Her writings on this subject, some of which were written under the name Ethan Arbow, were motivated by her conviction that Christianity had been misled into supporting war by the false conversion of Emperor Constantine. Late in her life she developed an additional interest in organic foods and gardening.
