Biographical Note
Daniel M. Smiley (1856-1930), humanitarian, head of the annual Lake Mohonk Conference, was born in Vassalboro, ME. He graduated from Haverford College in 1878. After an early period as a school teacher of Latin and Greek at the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, he devoted himself to various humanitarian endeavors, including the Lake Mohonk Conference, which considered ways of aiding Native Americans, Filipinos, Puerto Ricans and other inhabitants of American dependencies. He was a member of the board of trustees at Vassar for twenty years from 1902-1922. He died at his home after a long illness on 14 February 1930 at the age of 74.
