Biographical Note
Richard Wilson is a pianist and composer. His compositions include symphonies, string quartets, and numerous orchestral, vocal, and chamber works, as well as the opera Aethelred the Unready (1992). He has recieved several honors and awards, including the Hinrichsen Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Since 1992 he has served as Composer-in-Residence with the American Symphony. Wilson joined the Music Department of Vassar College in 1966 and retired 2017.
TopScope and Content Note
This collection consists primarily of personal and professional correspondence documenting Richard Wilson's career from 1965 to 2015. Correspondents include a broad range of prominent composers, conductors, muscians, and other cultural figures, such as Aaron Copeland, Elliott Carter, Yo-Yo Ma, Steve Reich, Virgil Thomson, and Dawn Upshaw. Also included are teaching materials Wilson developed for his regular course in advanced harmony.
