Biographical Note
Anna Davis Hallowell (1838-1905), artist and writer, was the daughter of Maria and Edward M. Davis. Her maternal grandparents were James and Lucretia Mott, the prominent Quaker abolitionists and women's rights activist. She was married in 1859 to Richard Price Hallowell, a successful merchant, writer, and abolitionist, who was also a Quaker. In Valiant Friend, Margaret Hope Bacon reports that of all the Mott daughters and granddaughters Anna Davis Hallowell was the only one who remained active in the field of reform and had an interest in an independent career, as a writer. She was the editor of James and Lucretia Mott, Life and Letters.
