Biographical Note

In the late 1950s Elsie Slaughter sent a series of unsolicited manuscripts to the Vassar College Library. At that time she was living in El Cajon, Calif. and was advanced in years. In her letters to the library, Slaughter offered little autobiographical information except to say that she was a professional writer and had suffered from "mental depression." The manuscripts, most of which deal with the history of women, appear to have been the result of many years of research but are unsupported by bibliographical documentation. Judging from the manuscripts and correspondence, it appears likely that Elsie Slaughter had lived in Great Britain and may have been born there.

Scope and Content Note

Papers primarily consist of Slaughter's undated manuscripts on London in 1918, her childhood in England, Ireland before 1914, and her research into women's history, including women artists, doctors, midwives, women in politics, women and education, and women and religion. There is also correspondence with Vassar College about her manuscripts, 1958-1962.
