Administrative History

When Vassar College first opened its doors in 1861, there was a Department of History and Political Economy, but there were no dedicated history faculty. In the early decades of the college, history classes were often taught by the college president. In 1887, the first history professor, Lucy Maynard Salmon, was hired. It was Salmon who created an independent history department at Vassar.
