Margaret Stanley-Brown, born in Washington, DC, was graduated from Vassar in 1919. Her sister Ruth was Vassar Class of 1915. Her mother Mary Garfield Stanley-Brown, was the daughter of President James A. Garfield. By her own account, "surgery was all" Margaret Stanley-Brown "ever wanted to do." She graduated from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1923. In addition to the surgical practice she established in New York City, Dr. Stanley-Brown was an instructor in the Department of Surgical Pathology at Columbia for twenty-five years. She was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and one of two women members of the New York Surgical Society. In 1950 she was married to Max K.
