Note about Poster Stamps

Poster stamps were introduced in the late 19th century in Europe, soon after the invention of the postage stamp. They are larger than postage stamps, were frequently issued for commemorative events or exhibitions, but also used for commercial purposes and propaganda.

Scope and Content Note

Fourteen albums of poster stamps, arranged roughly alphabetically by country, with a final volume at the end with the stamps of Ludwig Hohlwein. Also includes two volumes of matchbox labels. One of the matchbox label volumes is a thin paper folder with containing just one label.
