Finding Aids Collection

This collection of finding aids describe items in both the Virginia B. Smith Memorial Manuscript Collection and the College Archives. The Virginia B. Smith Memorial Manuscript Collection is named after the eighth president of Vassar College, whose vision for the library included the addition of personal papers of a number of key literary figures. The holdings range from medieval illuminated manuscripts to modern manuscripts, and include over 500 collections of Vassar College graduates, faculty, and others affiliated with the college. The Vassar College Archives documents the history of the College from its founding in 1861 to the present. It includes publications, administrative records, meeting minutes, architectural drawings, photograph and audiovisual collections, subject files, artifacts, and other materials. The Elsa Butler Grove Collection contains correspondence, typescripts, printed materials and photographs. The most notable portions of the collection relate to her service in the Baltic States and work with the American Red Cross and the Vassar Unit in France during World War I. There is also material related to the proposed establishment of an archives at Vassar College, miscellaneous printed material, and some biographical material.

One photograph album which documents Nollen's life from her time as a student at Vassar College (1890-1894) and the University of Chigago (1894-1895). It also included images from her many positions as a teacher of Greek and Latin. There are portraits of her classmates at Vassar College, the University of Chicago, and Providence High School, as well as portraits and candid photographs of friends and family in Chicago; Grinell, Iowa; Saratoga, New York; Alleghany, Pennsylvania; Providence, Rhode Island; and Lake Forest, Illinois.

The Stockton collection consists mostly of material related to Stockton's experiences at Camp Chequesset, a summer camp for girls on Cape Cod, from 1925-1930. Elizabeth Bishop also attended the camp during that period. There are snaps of Bishop in a photograph album and some of her early poetry is included in the camp newsletters.

The Eugene A. Carroll Papers document Carroll's academic career as an art historian, curator, writer, as well as his involvement as executor of the William K. Rose estate. The papers contain professional and personal correspondence and include letters documenting Carroll's relationship with his partner, William K. Rose, during the 1960s. The W.K. Rose material also includes photographic prints, travel journals, a limited volume of subject files and writings by Rose, and one audio tape interview. The Carroll Papers contain subject files, including teaching and research reference materials, travel files, datebooks, writings by Carroll, correspondence with colleagues, friends, and Rose, as well as a limited volume of correspondence from Carroll to his parents. Holdings also include journals, photographic prints, and documentation regarding the management of the Rose estate and Vassar's W.K. Rose fellowship.

Houghton, and letters from the Board of Trustees, the College President, and the
Secretary of the Alumnae Association congratulating Cushing on having a residence
hall named in her honor in 1927.

Abstract
The bulk of these papers are letters to Clark from conscientious objectors and political prisoners sentenced under the Espionage Act and other legislation enacted during World War I, discussing their lives in prison, their philosophy on war and militarism, political issues, their legal cases, their families, lumberjack experiences, reaction to prison life, and current issues outside prison, 1922-1937. Some of the prisoners were Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) members arrested after labor disturbances in Centralia, Washington. Included are six letters from Ray Becker, 1922-1927, and 41 letters from Warren K. Billings, 1924-1937. Other items include pamphlets, poetry, clippings, and photographs as well as three notebooks from her time at Vassar, 1890-1891.
