I think, let’s leave it as is, apart from changes that are unavoidable for formal reasons. Simply say that the complication owing to the smallness of the present balance would solve itself if I stayed alive for a few more years. The complication also arises because cases of such different kinds and duration must be taken into consideration as solicitously as possible, taking into account the circumstance that there’s only a little bit in case of an early death. It’s also composed so that nothing has to be changed if I live on some years longer and quite a lot more accumulates. Also say that almost all of it has been saved up in these last few years because, of course, I lost almost everything I used to have. Then the gentlemen will see that it’s not so stupidly conceived even if, on the face of it, it does look like it.
We have, by the way, not taken into account the case where Edward E. dies before me. Then for the other allowances, which are correlated with the one for E. E., we can [take]: 50% of that which E. E. received during the last year of my, resp., his death.
You need not come and see me about the will anymore. If the necessary changes are appropriate, I will sign without further ado.

Ich glaube wir lassen es so bis auf Aenderungen, die aus formalen Gründen unvermeidlich sind. Sagen Sie einfach, die Komplikation wegen der Kleinheit des gegenwärtigen Standes würde sich beheben, wenn ich noch ein paar Jahre am Leben bleibe. Die Komplikation kommt auch daher, dass Fälle von so verschiedener Art und Dauer möglichst fürsorglich berücksichtigt werden müssen unter Berücksichtigung des Umstandes, dass bei baldigem Tode nur wenig da ist. Es ist auch so gefasst, dass nichts geändert werden muss, wenn ich noch etliche Jahre lebe und ziemlich viel dazu kommt. Sagen Sie auch, dass beinahe alles in diesen paar Jahren zusammengespart ist, da ich ja fast alles verloren habe, was ich früher hatte. Dann werden die Herren schon sehen, dass es nicht dumm gemacht ist, wenn es schon bei oberflächlicher Betrachtung so aussieht.
Wir haben übrigens nicht den Fall ins Auge gefasst, dass Edward E. vor mir stirbt. Wir können also bei den übrigen Zuwendungen, die ja auf die an E. E. bezogen sind: 50% von dem, was E. E im letzten Jahre vor meinem bzw. seinem Tode erhielt.
Wegen des Testaments brauchen Sie mich nicht mehr aufsuchen. Wenn die nötigen Aenderungen angebracht sind, werde ich umstandslos unterzeichnen.
