As one who is deeply interested in the progress of peace and social being of our people, I want to join with its many friends and well wishers in extending heartiest congratulations to the National Council of Jewish Women on the occasion of the celebration of its 45th Anniversary. It is very encouraging and inspiring to know that there is in this country a large group of women in every part of the United States who are so unselfish in their promotion of a program of social service and legislation for the betterment of all people. I know that the service given by the National Council of Jewish Women has always been on a high professional basis. For forty-five years these Jewish women have been a solace and friend to the bewildered women and children who have been driven from far off lands of oppression and distress to seek a haven of refuge in this country. I wish them well in their work.
During these times of heavy oppression of the Jewish people, mutual assistance is doubly important; it is—I should like to say thank god—our only defensive weapon in the harsh struggle for survival. Weakened by fragmentation into countless party affiliations we are, nevertheless, all united by the finest of all duties, namely the duty of selfless mutual aid; and Jewry has never failed to heed this call.
Mutual assistance requires systematic work and organization. In the United States, the N. C. of J. W. is an exemplary embodiment of this. How often already have I ‹seen and› been able to observe it performing its benevolent and effective work and been delighted by ‹the good and self-sacrificing› the selfless commitment and practical sense of Jewish women in America, who brought this ‹beneficial› institution to life 45 years ago and have been serving it loyally ever since.
I heartily congratulate you on the occasion of your anniversary celebration and add the wish that your organization, of which American Jewry can be proud, may in future unite even more completely than in the past all of America’s Jewish women in its beneficent endeavors.
