Description
Silent film with title cards, produced for the Vassar College Bureau of Publication by Jules Bucher and Willard Pictures. Begins with the arrival of new students followed by descriptions of academic and student life. Events include the 1943 spring convocation, Class Day, and commencement. The Class Day clip includes the Class of 1945 Daisy Chain. Scenes of sports and physical education include body mechanics, posture and basketball, fencing, tennis, swimming, skiing, ice skating, and dance. Footage of campus buildings and grounds include Taylor Gate, Rockefeller, Blodgett, the Nursery School, the Art Library and Art Museum, the Social Museum, Sunset Lake, the Outdoor Ecological Laboratory and greenhouses, Sanders Chemistry, Skinner, the theater in Avery, Alumnae Gym, Kenyon pool, Alumnae House, and extensive footage of the interior of Thompson Memorial Library. Some of the faculty featured are Mabel Newcomer (economics), Lyle Lanier (psychology), Helen Lockwood (English), Leila Barber (art), Harvard professor Alvin Hansen, and college dean C. Mildred Thompson. A segment on dramatics includes footage of professor Hallie Flanagan and a scene from the Argentine play "Santos Vega." There are also clips of a Students Association meeting, student jobs, and the Community Church, which worked with local white children and children of color via Poughkeepsie's Lincoln Center.
