Mother, dear -
After the lengthy epistle I dispatched this a.m. there’s not a startling amount of news left to relate in the p.m. but I just had to write before I go to bed and tell you how much I love the Valentine you sent me. It’s a perfect sweetheart of a dress - and if I do say it as shouldn’t, it looks very nice on me. I suppose you want to know just how it fits and how it came - in what condition, etc.
The box was crushed almost beyond recognition as to the skirt the gown wasn’t injured in the lease. The waist is a little large in the brest, but by raising the skirt a little bit - and thereby remedying the hang as well - it will be simply perfect. I haven’t a spare second myself in which to fix it so I’m going to trot over to Miss [Wickse’s] with it early in the morning and see what she can do for me. It won’t take her over a couple of hours to fix it, I don’t believe. Florence has bought a lovely white beaded satin trimmed with brown maribou [sic] - it has a train! And she looks adorable in it.
This afternoon a quartette of colored men from Hampton Institute in Virginia gave a fair sort of concert. They sang very well - there was a [gulen] came along with them an told his life-history and what
Hampton Institute had done for him. He had an unusual accent that was very fascinating to listen to, indeed.
I really must go to bed right straight away. You are one sweetheart to send me that dress. I certainly am more than pleased. I would have been very willing to wear the tan one however - but this one is just exactly like what I’ve always wanted - even to the bead-fringe trimming.
