CORNELIA M. RAYMOND
1861 - 1952
Cornelia M. Raymond has spanned in her life the
whole history of Vassar College. In her Memories
of a Child of Vassar she tells of the early days
of the college; in Her later researches during
the 1930's and l940’s she has added innumerable
items of value in Vassar's past.
As a teacher in Delhi Academy and The Elms in
Springfield, Mass., Miss Raymond had classes in
Latin, which was her chosen subject, and in
Greek, mathematics, and chemistry. Her knowledge
of chemistry came into good use when during her
residence as an associate warden, she assisted the
Department of Chemistry and coached many a slow-
learning pupil into successful passing of examina-
tions. Her maintenance of the publicity bulletin
board has been one of the most characteristic of
Vassar features; it has taught Vassar to see itself
as others see it, and has been an applied course
in journalism for the whole student body. In her
direction of the Bureau of Publication, Miss Raymond
emphasized the pride of Vassar in its alumnal record,
and developed many contacts with graduates which
were later to bear fruit in aid to the college.
Twice Miss Raymond has retired, and twice been
recalled into service either official or unofficial
on behalf of the college. we are happy that in her
third retirement Miss Raymond still plans to remain
a member of the college community, and to continue
her studies informally in the history of the
institution and of its graduates. we wish her many
years of fruitful service.
