[Sept. 28, 1911]

101 Main, Vassar College
Dearest Mother -
I have so much to say that I don’t see how I can possibly get it all into one letter but I’ll make a bold stab at the impossible as usual. In the first place, I just love every subject I’m taking. Wonder of wonders! I think I’m even going to like History as it is taught here. I have Miss True, new this year in it. I’m inclosing [sic] a rather incomplete copy of this semester’s schedule. You see I have still to arrange for a thirst Harmony class in ear-training, a Spoken English class and my piano-lessons. I had a fifteen minute interview with Miss Chittendon today. She wanted to know all about Marg. and Ev. and said some very nice things about you three daughters. She gave me a dear little “Jig”, arranged by MacDonell to work on. I was practicing away on it

for dear life this p.m. when suddenly somebody knocked on the door. Lo and behold! in popped Lady Chittendon. Scared? I was scared blue for fear she was going to scold me for going too fast or something. Instead, says she “You like that, don’t you?” “Very much” say I. “That’s good” says she. “Please memorize it” and out she goes again.
Yesterday I tried out for choir but as yet haven’t heard whether I made it or not. Professor Gow first made me sind some scales and what do you think! He said I hit high C charly! and that he was very much pleased! I do hope I can at least substitute this year. I asked him if he thought vocal-lessons for me worth while and he said he thought I would enjoy them very much. Rather an enigmatic reply but he was awfully busy at

“Literary Digest” and either the N.Y. “Press” or “Sun” - I don’t care particularly which of the papers, if there’s any differences in price the cheaper will meet needs very successfully, I’m sure. I never saw such high-priced books as they’re requiring for my courses. I’m sending a little slip that will show you I’ve spent on supplies the cash I expected for my class ring with.
Everybody likes my room - so they say - but it’s altogether too convenient for people to dump their belongings in for it to be exactly comfortable for the occupant. However, perhaps they wouldn’t come at all, if I lived in North. Am still table-less but am managing to eat nevertheless. I’ve taken nearly the entire bottle cook and all of Arnold’s Cough Dope but it

the time. He is the organist and choir-leader. Professor Griggs is the vocal-instructor. After I sung scales for him, he lauded out a Shakespearian song to read at sight, that’s about all that happened then.
I’ve been working like mad on Harmony all evening and have at last finished the assignment for next time, for which I am devoutly thankful, believe me. Dorothy Smith is taking exactly the same subjects that I am, excepting that whereas I’m taking Electricity, She’s taking shorter course French. We’re in the same Harmony and Argumentation sections.
That reminds me - our Arg. teacher requires us to subscribe to a daily paper and a weekly review as part of our class-work. Shall I attend to it or will you subscribe for me to the

doesn’t seem to be of any avail. I get so that I choke now but I don’t dare go to Dr. T. for fear she pack me off to the infirmary. Ed Corey made me go to her office this evening after I’d had an unusually hard spell that left me breathless but thank heaven she wasn’t in. Ed wants me to be sure and go to her in the morning but I told her I reckoned

I’d write you first and see what you thought.
Now, I really must G.B. as I have to get up early and go to the library for some Physics work. I haven’t said half I wanted to, but I guess I’ve gotten in all the essentials. Here’s hoping anyway. Did Evelyn like the pictures for her character-book?
Sleepily but with all the love in the world.
        Muriel.

I’m going to buy some serge and make my own gym bloomers. Can’t wait for the dress maker . Haven’t I another middy blouse at home?
