Knollwood Saranac Lake N. Y. 16 August 1940 Dear Nathan, The wife and sister of Philipp Halsmann, formerly sentenced in Austria (you surely remember that Austrian Dreyfus affair), came to see me about the threat to Halsmann. He is in unoccupied France in the vicinity of Vichy. He is in danger because—apart from the accumulated hatred since that time—as a photographer, he has taken pictures of prominent Nazi opponents that have circulated through the world press. For these reasons I am convinced that his rescue out of the German-controlled area is not only justified but definitely falls within the scope of Roosevelt’s rescue campaign. I earnestly urge you to receive these two women, who will call on you, and to present the matter somehow to MacDonald. I would gladly be prepared to vouch for this matter before the Advisory Committee, insofar as all of you deem it useful. With cordial regards, Yours, A. Einstein. [TLS]
