2 May 1941 Dear Nathan, Black Mountain College in North Carolina, which Miss Dukas had phoned you about, is a small but excellently liberally minded college that was brought into being seven years ago by its own teachers. These people, teachers and students together, are currently constructing their new building with their own hands because the one currently leased is otherwise needed. I was there a couple of days ago and was asked about Mr. Roll, whom the college wanted to invite. As this obviously is not a possibility, an opportunity could arise to accommodate a capable younger man, e. g., a refugee. (You do have many of those.) Since this would involve elementary courses, a special research orientation seems not to be of considerable importance. The teachers’ pay is as modest as it is uncertain—albeit, bed and board are included—but it is an exceedingly nice circle of people. In any event, only a likeable character can be recommended to them. If you don’t know of anyone, do also write me to that effect immediately so that I can inform Mr. Roll as soon as possible. With cordial regards, Yours, A. Einstein. P. S. Please send 10 doll. for Pfemfert to the address indicated in the enclosed letter. [TLS. On embossed letterhead: “A.
