13 August [49] Dear Nathan, Your letters (from the 2nd, take your pick) were received with great interest. I can imagine how difficult it is to get reliable information in such a short time and under such aggravating circumstances. Ever since holy Austria, the Czechs have maintained an obstinate attitude toward all foreigners, which I encountered in Prague long before the “Munich” scandal, and which may well have become more ingrained with the events of the last few years: Mud is slung at us from the West, Even with the Russians, it’s no treat. That little Tito-Stalin dance shows that socialism isn’t yet a safe route to meekness (this with reference to our earlier conversations). Here all‘s well so far, except that I’m breaking my last few teeth on cracking those computations. But it’s at least worth the effort! No news from Zurich. Albert applied for an extension to the deadline for a decision regarding acceptance of the inheritance. I’m very much looking forward to seeing you again, hopefully not always for such a short time. I feel with pain that circumstances force me to add constantly to your worries. Lazarus just barely escaped danger when a crashing airplane exploded right in front of his country home. All the best, Yours, A. E. [ALS]
