22 May [1953] Dear Nathan, I send you herewith a letter along with a copy of my answer. That man must have thick skin! Cordial wishes, especially also to your dear parents, Yours, A. Einstein. Copy Princeton, 22 May 1953 Esteemed Mr. Sachar, It is an awkward business not to be able to respond in kind to friendly behavior. But in the present case I have no other recourse. What happened at that time, during the planning stages for Brandeis University, can certainly not be attributed to misunderstandings and can no longer be redressed. Thus I cannot accept the honorary doctorate intended for me. I do not want this affair to be spoken about because that would be detrimental to the university and I am just going to inform my closest friend, who has a right to know about it. With kind regards, A. E. ____________ 2nd enclosure. Letter from Goldstein’s caretaker. [ALS. Includes ATrLS, A. Einstein to Sachar.]
