[March 23, 52] Greenglass, by virtue of his own statement, is a totally unreliable witness—and furthermore, likely interested in Rosenberg’s conviction. Gr. is obviously not to be regarded as an expert, but had occasion to learn of details notable to a layman that could perhaps be significant to an expert. Without knowledge of the written reconstruction of Gr.’s report to the Russ. agents, it is consequently difficult to find out whether the report contained essential points for an expert and whether the report really could have been written by him alone. In my view, there are only 2 points that make Rosenberg appear suspicious to me: 1) The statement by the former classmate Elytscher that R. had asked him for military information, 2) The, seemingly, uncontested fact that the Rosenbergs ordered passport photographs about one month after Gold’s arrest and did so under false pretenses (trip to France in a matter of inheritance).
