Correspondence

The collection contains
correspondence, writings, photographs, and clippings related to the life and career
of American classicist and Vassar College professor Elizabeth Hazelton Haight (1872-1964).

The Elsa Butler Grove Papers contains correspondence, typescripts, printed materials, and photographs, primarily related to Grove's service in the Baltic States and work with the American Red Cross and the Vassar Unit in France during World War I.

Variety of rare manuscripts relating
to American and European history, art and literature.

The Eugene A. Carroll Papers document Carroll's academic career as an art historian, curator, writer, as well as his involvement as executor of the William K. Rose estate. The papers contain professional and personal correspondence and include letters documenting Carroll's relationship with his partner, William K. Rose, during the 1960s. The W.K. Rose material also includes photographic prints, travel journals, a limited volume of subject files and writings by Rose, and one audio tape interview. The Carroll Papers contain subject files, including teaching and research reference materials, travel files, datebooks, writings by Carroll, correspondence with colleagues, friends, and Rose, as well as a limited volume of correspondence from Carroll to his parents. Holdings also include journals, photographic prints, and documentation regarding the management of the Rose estate and Vassar's W.K. Rose fellowship.

The collection contains materials
from 1921 celebrating Florence Cushing's contributions to Vassar College in
connection with the 50th anniversary of the college's Alumnae Association, including
a decorated autograph book. Also included are a scrapbook compiled by Elizabeth G.
Houghton, and letters from the Board of Trustees, the College President, and the
Secretary of the Alumnae Association congratulating Cushing on having a residence
hall named in her honor in 1927.

Correspondence, articles by and about
Goudy, type specimens, type and other printing hardware, memorabilia, and other
materials relating to Frederic Goudy and his type designs.

Papers primarily concerning Flanagan's teaching and theater activities at Vassar College and her work with the Federal Theater Project. Includes correspondence, curriculum materials, scripts and other play records, reports, speeches, programs, playbills, photographs, scrapbooks, and clippings.

Materials relating to the Hill family's personal, professional, and political activities. The bulk of the collection relates most directly to Elsie M. Hill (VC 1906).

The collection consists of journalist and educator Jeanne R. Lowe's correspondence, writings, notes, and substantial research materials pertaining to urban renewal, urban housing, the role of women in the sciences, race, public housing, and community planning in the United States. Specific cities covered include New York, New Haven, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Miami, Sunnyvale (CA), Chicago, Rochester, and Washington, D.C.. Writings include drafts of Lowe's book (1967), as well as numerous other publications written for the Ford Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and other non-governmental organizations. Also included are personal and professional materials related to Lowe's life and career, including her work with academic organizations as a lecturer and organizer for Goucher College, Vassar College, and New York University.

The Jeh Vincent Johnson Papers contain materials created or collected by Johnson throughout his life and career as an architect and Vassar College faculty member.

Includes 53 original Burroughs
journals as well as a typescript of the journals prepared by his granddaughter,
Elizabeth Burroughs Kelley, and another typescript prepared by his literary
executor, Dr. Clara Barrus. In addition, there are manuscripts, sketch books,
scrapbooks and correspondence, including letters to Burroughs from Edith Rickert,
Walt Whitman, and others; as well as letters by Burroughs to family, friends,
colleagues and readers. The bulk of the correspondence is to and from his wife
Ursula and son Julian, but other correspondents include Georgia Avery Kendrick,
Clara S. Reed, Minnie and Orlando Rouland, James M. Taylor, Mary W. Whitney, and
others. Also included are published and unpublished materials and photographs
relating to Burroughs.

Field notes and manuscripts related to American anthropologist John Hempstead Bushnell's ethnographic work in Mexico.

Materials collected by John S. Van E. Kohn, bibliophile and co-founder of the Seven Gables Bookshop in New York City. Includes manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, sheet music, miscellaneous printed material, photographs and notes compiled by Kohn about Millay's publication and his collection. The correspondence includes 8 letters to Frank Crowinshield, managing editor of Vanity Fair, and Karl Yost, a Millay bibliographer.

Correspondence, notebooks, manuscripts and drafts, memorabilia, artwork, publications, and photographs relating to and/or created by Katherine Brownell Collier, covering her turn-of-the-century childhood as well as her time at Vassar and her life post-graduation.

The collection consists of correspondence, notes, diaries, and other material relating to and created by
Laura Brownell Collier (VC 1874), covering her time at Vassar and beyond.

Memoirs, manuscripts, diaries, correspondence and other materials documenting the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons affiliated with Vassar College.

Papers primarily concerning her work
in literature, publishing, and editing, especially for children, and including
correspondence, manuscripts, illustrations, biographical information, and published
articles and reviews from or pertaining to authors, illustrators, and
publishers.

An artificial collection of letters,
diaries, account books, land grants, deeds, wills, and other historical materials
originally established by the History Department at Vassar College.

The Lucy Maynard Salmon Collection
includes the personal papers of Lucy Maynard Salmon along with two smaller collections
of papers belonging to her mother, Maria Clara Maynard Salmon, and her brother, Pomeroy L. Salmon. The materials relate
to her work as an historian and professor at Vassar College as well as her work with
the suffrage movement and local political issues. There are also materials relating
to her family, education and personal life. Formats include correspondence,
manuscripts, printed material, clippings, minutes, reports, notes, and
photographs.

The Margery Clinton Papers include correspondence, photographs, clippings and other materials relating to Clinton's relationship with Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain).
