Abstract
The bulk of the Claflin collection is from the years 1927-1934, the period in which she received her graduate degrees and began to teach at Vassar College as an associate professor and later as a full professor. While the collection itself is mainly made up of correspondence, it also contains an eclectic selection of material, including: various drafts of her doctoral thesis, newspaper clippings concerning her career, programs of exhibits, class notes and assorted miscellanea.

There are portraits of her classmates at Vassar College, the University of Chicago, and Providence High School, as well as portraits and candid photographs of friends and family in Chicago; Grinell, Iowa; Saratoga, New York; Alleghany, Pennsylvania; Providence, Rhode Island; and Lake Forest, Illinois.

The Jean Webster Papers at the Vassar College Libraries Department of Special Collections are part of the McKinney Family Papers, a collection of papers from the Clemens, Moffett, Webster, and McKinney families. They were donated to Vassar College in 1977, along with the endowment of a chair in American Literature, in honor of Jean Webster. The donors are Jean McKinney Connor, daughter of Jean Webster and Glenn Ford McKinney, and her husband Ralph Connor, a former trustee of Vassar.
