Biographical Note

Christine Vassar Tall arrived in the United States in 1940, one of a group of children evacuated from London to North America during the German bombing of the city. Distantly related to Matthew Vassar, Vassar Tall lived with the family of Vassar president Henry Noble MacCracken while she attended Arlington High School near Poughkeepsie. In the fall of 1944, Vassar Tall enrolled in the College and graduated in 1947. After a brief reunion with her famly in London, Vassar Tall returned to the United States, where she lived for the rest of her life. In 1961 she married Anthony Donaldson Tall. In 2008 she published London War Letters of a Separated Family, 1940-1945, which collects the correspondence between her and her family members who remained in London after her evacuation.
