Administrative History
Since at least 1971 faculty, students, and trustees had advocated the creation of a Women's Studies Program. Not until 1977, however, was the first interdepartmental Women's Studies course added to the College curriculum. The following year a major in Women's Studies was introduced under the auspices of the Independent Program, a major that drew upon courses from a variety of departments. Women's Studies became a separate multidisciplinary concentration in 1986. From 1988 to 1998 the program continued to add new multidisciplinary courses to its curriculum. In 2002-2003 the program began offering a 12-credit multidisciplnary major and a 6-credit correlate sequence.
