Biographical Note
Canadian poet, born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, 15 April 1861. Descended from Loyalists who fled to Canada after the American Revolution, Carman was the son of William Carman and Sophia Mary Bliss Carman. He graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1881 with honors in classics. He received his M.A. from New Brunswick as well, in 1884. He also studied at Harvard and the Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh.
In 1888 Carman began working as a journalist in New York for Cosmopolitan and other magazines. In subsequent years, he established the short-lived The Chapbook and then moved to Boston and worked with a number of other magazines, including the Atlantic Monthly, Boston Transcript, and The Literary World. Carman's first volume of poetry, Low Tide on Grand Pre, garnered much acclaim. Other publications include Songs from Vagabondia, The Poetry of Life, The Making of Personality, Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics, and other collections of essays and poetry.
At the end of Carman's career, he lectured wideley and received a number of honorary degrees and awards including the Lorne Pierce Medal, Canada's highest literary distinction. Soon after receiving that degree, on 8 June 1929, he died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage.
