Finding Aids Collection

This collection of finding aids describe items in both the Virginia B. Smith Memorial Manuscript Collection and the College Archives. The Virginia B. Smith Memorial Manuscript Collection is named after the eighth president of Vassar College, whose vision for the library included the addition of personal papers of a number of key literary figures. The holdings range from medieval illuminated manuscripts to modern manuscripts, and include over 500 collections of Vassar College graduates, faculty, and others affiliated with the college. The Vassar College Archives documents the history of the College from its founding in 1861 to the present. It includes publications, administrative records, meeting minutes, architectural drawings, photograph and audiovisual collections, subject files, artifacts, and other materials. Papers consist mostly of correspondence concerning her personal and literary interests, including her original letters to Mary H. Rollins, Elkin Mathews, and others, 1887-1919; photocopies of her letters to Annie Adams Fields (Mrs. James T. Fields) and to Sarah Orne Jewett, 1884-1914; and microfilm copy of her letters in the Library of Congress and the Huntington Library. Other items include biographical and bibliographic materials; copies of Guiney's published works; microfilm copy of a dissertation on Guiney by Mary Murphy, 1939; and correspondence about Guiney between Vassar and Immaculate Heart College, 1979.

includes the personal papers of Lucy Maynard Salmon along with two smaller collections
of papers belonging to her mother, Maria Clara Maynard Salmon, and her brother, Pomeroy L. Salmon. The materials relate
to her work as an historian and professor at Vassar College as well as her work with
the suffrage movement and local political issues. There are also materials relating
to her family, education and personal life. Formats include correspondence,
manuscripts, printed material, clippings, minutes, reports, notes, and
photographs.
