Dear Nathan,
With real enthusiasm and the greatest satisfaction did I gather from your letter that two reputable institutions have offered you a fitting and fulfilling field of activity. I’m also glad that you will be breathing in the intellectually freer (albeit for the nose, less attractive) atmosphere of New York. The excellent mathematician Siegel, whom you perhaps also met in Princeton, delivered some lectures at New York University and was delighted with the diligence and thirst for knowledge of the young people there (in contrast to Princeton!). I am now all the more convinced that it was fortunate for you that the Princetonians left you in the lurch.
Now would be the time for you to think of resting on your new laurels a little here with us. We do easily have room in the large house which we have rented. And as you know, of course, our way of life is quite heavily sanatorium-like.

Mit wirklicher Begeisterung und grösster Befriedigung habe ich aus Ihrem Brief entnommen, dass Ihnen zwei angesehene Institutionen ein passendes und befriedigendes Wirkungsfeld angeboten haben. Auch bin ich froh, dass Sie die geistig freiere (aber dafür für die Nase weniger anziehende) Atmosphäre New Yorks atmen werden. Der ausgezeichnete Mathematiker Siegel, den Sie vielleicht auch in Princeton getroffen haben, hat in der New York University einige Vorträge gehalten und war begeistert über den Eifer und Wissensdurst der dortigen jungen Leute (im Gegensatz zu Princeton!).
