Description
Main (Thompson) Library location: South wing -- End window. Theodosius Rihel (c.15-- – 1608) was active as a printer in Strasbourg beginning in 1555, when he and his brother Josias took over the printing press of their father Wendelin. Before their father's retirement, they printed their first book together, a treatise by Pietro Martire Vermigli, under the name "Rihelios Fratres." By 1558 Theodosius began to work independent of his brother and printed an edition of Johannes Sleidanus' Commentariorum de statu religionis et reipublicae. Rihel established a partnership with his brother-in-law, Samuel Emmel, starting with their joint publication in 1567 of a New Testament edited by Erasmus. Over the course of his career, Rihel established seven printing presses throughout Strasbourg, from which he produced over 170 works, including dictionaries, schoolbooks, and classical and theological literature. The last work attributed to Rihel before his death in 1608 is Ordentliche Beschreibung und Verzeychniß/allerey fürnemer Händel. Rihel used his own monogram as the basis of this printer's mark. A reversed four-mark surmounts the initials T.R. Rihel used an elaborate illustration for his full device, cut by the artist Bernard Jobin. The device depicts the mythological Nemesis bearing a carpenter's square and the bit and bridle of a horse. The graceful figure – partially nude, partially clothed in cascades of drapery – stands on a pedestal before a countryside landscape. This scene is enclosed in a dimensional, decorative border that includes female personifications of Temperance and Justice and two cherubim of Love – one disarmed, the other triumphant.
