Description
Main (Thompson) Library location: North wing -- Sixth window. Brothers Geoffroy, Jean, and Enguilbert de Marnef printed collaboratively and shared a printing press in Paris at the Sign of the Pelican, founded by Geoffroy, from which they issued their first publication Les sept degres de l'echelle in 1483. The brothers also established themselves in other locations throughout France, namely Poitiers, Angers, and Bourges. The content of their hundreds of publications ranges from classical literature to religious documents and government manifests. Major works include Ovid's Metamorphoses, Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics, and St. Jerome's Epistles. Their tremendous practice was survived by their many children – many of whom married into the families of other noteworthy printers, including Ambroise Girault and Pierre Viart – and continued to produce books until the turn of the seventeenth century. The Brothers de Marnef utilized approximately thirteen different printing devices; most of them contained the simple mark displayed in the Vassar Library. This mark incorporates their initials, E.I.G. into a signature monogram, atop a diagonal cross, bisected by a vertical line. Beneath this symbol is a scroll, bearing the family name De Marnef. By the deaths of Geoffroy and Jean, the monogram was reduced to the sole initial E. Their full devices were rather elaborate and included decorative, architectural engravings. In the central composition, their mark appears embedded in a natural landscape, delineated by two trees. In the upper boughs of the tree on the left, a pelican feeds her three young, symbolizing the three brothers and their work at the Sign of the Pelican. On a high branch of the opposing tree, a hawk keeps watch over the nest of pelicans.
