The Faculty of Vassar College desire to give
expression to the sentiment of regret and sympathy
on the occasion of Professor Orton's death, and to
testify their regard for the character of their de-
parted friend.
He was a scholar in the truest sense of the word,
and his labors will always eminently stand forth on
the record of scientific exploration. His efficiency
as an instructor as well as his enthusiasm and inde-
fatigable industry in furthering the interests of our
College, cannot be too highly valued and will leave
their mark for a long time to come. He was a good
man;- his genial and sympathetic nature, his modesty
and child like simplicity, and the purity of his high-
toned character, secured for him the affectionate re-
gard of his colleagues and pupils, and the high esteem
in which he was held by all who knew him. So, while
his name will occupy an honorable place in the history
of science and public instruction, his memory will
ever be cherished in the hearts of his colleagues,
pupils, and friends.
Therefore resolved, That we tender to Mrs. Orton, and
her family, our heartfelt condolence, and express the
hope that, with the consolations which our trust in
the guidance of Divine Providence affords, they may
also derive comfort from the knowledge that their
grief is shared by many, that his life was made happy
through the love of his family, the attachment of
numerous friends, and the successful pursuit of con-
genial labors, and that his death has shed lasting
glory on his noble work.
