Dearest Mamie
I enclose a dear note from Hilda in answer to my un-acceptance of her invitation. She only has a day or two for vacation I think and probably wouldn’t be able to leave Baltimore to go to Rocksmore -- at any rate I shan’t say anything to her about my going there, and she needn’t ever find out about it; besides, it won’t cost any more than it would to stay here. I think you might have told me before that it wasn;t altogether expense that kept
you from letting me go to Baltimore. Aside from the fact that it is absurd to think a girl my age can’t travel alone, there are plenty of girls who live in Washington or thereabouts, and with whom I could have crossed New York City. However I’ll probably have the time of my life at Rocksmore -- just think, only five more days till vacation. Then I’m just going to be out of doors all the time. Dr Harley is such a peach, I’m so glad to have the opportunity to see something of her.
The T and M and Qui Vive Debate came off last night and was most exciting. We (T and M) lost but we had enough fun afterwards singing on the campus to make up for it. There is nothing like college singing!
Here is a cute verse - Elsie Rushmore was working hard on a debate for arg class on the Fiscal Policy one day, when her sister dropped up to visit her from Brooklyn, so what she saw inspired the following:
I thought I saw a novelist
A-writing something grand --
I looked again and saw it was
My sister pen in hand.
The papers strewn about the floor,
Were like a great white sea,
And still she added more and more --
‘Twas the Fiscal Policy!
Miss Badgely works very slowly you know as she doesn’t sew but part of her time, and she will only get the blue dress done before vacation. She tried it on me yesterday and it is ravishing! Oh, but it is stunning -- I wish you could see it. I don’t know when I’ve had anything that
pleased me so much.
Betty is much better today but she has really been feeling pretty badly for a week. She didn’t go out of the room till yesterday.
I hope you will write something for The Reader -- please do! You had so many good ideas for stories last summer, do write some of them -- I know you can if you will.
Here is a rather good perverted proverb that Betty got off ‘tother day -- “A word to the unwise is “Deficient.”’
It is sad, but alas I have to go to church now! I know we’ll have a [hum] sermon. So you are going to Mr Smith’s church now are you -- tut tut, what does Joshua do without you? To night I am going to sing in the Easter Song Service, which is always perfectly beautiful.
Goodbye now
Slews of love to you and dad
Peg.
Margaret Rockwood and Lou Zimmerman are going to be on the Daisy Chain this year, isn’t that nice?
Edith Tallant has been made one of the editors of the Miscellany.
