Dearest Mother -
For goodness ‘sake, how are you - and are you better? - and do you want me to come out there with my soothing influence (?) - and how are things anyway? I certainly am glad you’re near Dr. Maguire - that’s the only star on the horizon just at present, don’t you think? of course, you can’t tell you what

your plans will be - but you will let me know when you can, won’t you?
At last, I have some definite news for you - but don’t put too much stock in them at first, please - for if things don't work out rightly, I’ll be sorry I ever mentioned them - but anyway here goes. Beulah Tompkins, 1911, is a girl who is back here at college assisting in the music department and holding the position of secretary to Prof. Gow - head of V.C. music. Well, to make a long story short, she is engaged and will not be here after next year. This morning I had a long talk with Prof. Gow and he offered me the position she now holds if nothing goes wrong. Of course, he would have to fill the position and I might very likely be unable to get it the succeeding year - and there are other complications that might arise so that he couldn’t definitely promise it to me, but it is very probable that I may have it.

Prof. Gow said that he would like for me if possible to take some more vocal next year in preparation for the position as it would be necessary for me to be used in connection with several of the courses of the department to illustrate - songs, piano-work, etc. It also means accompanying-work at the recitals given by the artists who come her for that purpose - and, furthermore, it means doing private secretary work for Prof. Gow i.e. take care of all the correspondence

of the department. Prof. Gow wanted to know if I knew anything about type-writing and I was glad to be able to say that I had done quite a lot since I’d been here in college and thought I was capable of handling correspondence in that manner. I don’t know yet what the position pays - I’ll find out and let you know later.
    Last night Prof. Gow gave

a reception for Miss Graves (a program of whose afternoon performance I am enclosing) and I was asked to play at it. I had intended playing with my notes but I forgot my music and so had to play that great lone 12-page Schutt Valse from the Strauss Kaiserwalzer without a single note. Scared! oh my!
I am to give my recital on May 14 - have much work to do for it and no mistake. Miss Chittendon is working in extra hours for me this semester in preparation.
I must fly - have much to do this minute - Did I write you that I have learned to ring the chapel chimes? I have sole charge of it tonight - here’s hoping I get through it all right.
Vassar debates Holyoke Saturday. 25 girls are going - team consists of three. I’ll write again Sunday sure - have lesson with Miss Williamson this minute. Love
    Muriel
