Description
Main (Thompson) Library location: Class of '51 Reading Room. Pierre Gaudoul (c.14-- – c.1538) was a bookseller and printer in Paris beginning in 1508. His practice began with a printing press at the Sign of St. Cyril. There Gaudoul demonstrated a strong interest in contemporary humanist literature and published the works of notable writers including Jean Despautère, Baptista Mantuanus, Filippo Beroaldo, and Juan de Celaya. As his business prospered, Gaudoul moved to a different printing press in 1525. Two years later, he became a master at the Brotherhood of St. John the Evangelist. For the remaining years of his career, Gaudoul regularly printed theological works, specifically Bibles and the scholarship of saints; he retired in 1537. This mark displayed in the Vassar Library was not used until later in Gaudoul's career. It consists of a reversed patriarchal cross, with a W of unknown significance at the tip, and Gaudoul's initials, P.G., in script at the base. Earlier, while at the Sign of St. Cyril, Gaudoul used illustrations of sacred narratives instead of a printer's mark. Once adopting this symbolic monogram, however, he incorporated it into illustrations that included horses, griffins, dolphins, and wreaths of holly. It appears that toward the end of his career, Gaudoul reverted to using devices without his mark. The latest shows the hand of God presenting a blazing torch with the Latin inscription Sic luceat lux vestra ("Thus, let your light shine") from the Gospel of Matthew.
