P.M. Dr. McAfee Lafayette Ave. Pres. Gen. 1:1 In the beginning God I never heard him before & he is fine. Beautiful after meeting. Several raised their hands.
I took Communion in the A.M. Mother went to Church. Went to kindergarten S.S. with Harriet. She took up collections. Rob Morehouse came to supper.
Began Little Women.
Beautiful letter from Mr. Jump thanking me for Mother's picture. Prof. McGregory came to luncheon. I wrote letters & read from "Common Lot" aloud. This evening Bertha & Frank went to a dinner at her club. Minnie, Will, Ruth & I called on the Cases. We had ice-cream & music.
A.M. Mother & I called on Aunt Susan finding her very well. Susie Merriam talked about Dr. Dawson. Then we went to Ruths to luncheon meeting Minnie. Mrs. Hudson was there & her cousin Jessie came in. Minnie had a heart attack. I went up to see Winifred about going to N.Y. & had an awful time coming home in the storm. This evening Frank Sharpe came. I read Common Lot.
Such a bad day that Winifred did not bring Harriet to take her to see Miss Porter. I went to see Miss Leonard & took dinner at Clinton Alliance. Then we went to Miss [Wraif's] meeting. Emily [Cunnigan] Porter was there. I had not seen her since her marriage. I came home [tired] went up to Mrs. Cooper's but she was not in. Read a while this evening then went to bed.
I went to Glen Ridge & spent the day with Marguerite. Left Barclay St. at 10.30 & reached G.R. at 11.17. Left G.R. at 9.
P.M.
& reached Barclay St. at 9.40. It took me 1/2 hr. to reach Barclay St. via Ed. R.R. & Bridge. Saw Dorothy's School. Dorothy was good except for some fits of [...]. Buzzy was very friendly. The new house is nearly done. Rufus came home to dinner.

[Nell] [C...] Ward Bliss died at 2 this morning. The Springfield City Hall was totally [burned]. This evening Minnie scalded her hands with [cranberry]. I had my white mohair fitted by Mrs. Cooper.

Went to Dr. McAfee's to Young People's meeting. Called on Nell Irwin. Did not find her. Read Common Lot this evening.

Carrington Howard called here to say Aunt Susan was ill & couldn't have us. Staid home today.
P.M. Bertha & I made fudge. Finished Herricks' "Common Lot". Called again on Nell Irwin but did not find her.

A.M. Dr. McAfee Juo. 18:37. Mother & I went. We met him. Baby came to dinner. She seems sick. Ruth went out & took tea with the Dobsons & Mr. Flaxington. I called at the Raymonds. They are all sick but I talked with Susy. I called on Lucy Skinner & Ethel kept me to supper.
Spent the day mending clothes etc. I fixed lining of dress & went shopping. Eve. Long call from Nell Irwin.

Mother, Minnie, Mrs. Hudson, Ruth Raymond & I took luncheon at Winifred's. The evening Rob Jacobs & staid from before nine till 11.30. He is civil engineer on the Subway & has worked on Croton aqueduct. Frank came in a few minutes & Ruth helped entertain him.
I left on the 12 oclock train for Springfield. Edith [Seizham] on train. We did not sit together. Dr. & Mrs. Moxom, Miss Mary Porter, Clara Reed, Mr. & Mrs. Porter & Edward came to dinner.
School opened. Prayer-meeting. Mr. Story 11. Analysis class.
I went down town today. Staid upstairs this evening while Louise entertained girls. Mary Porter talked to girls & conducted my Am. Lit. class.
Miss Berensen. 11 Edward's lesson. 27 I took my first treatment in Osteopathy. Called with Mary Porter on the Bartletts. Fixed room.
Dr. Moxom preached on Revelation. Miss Buckingham, Gertrude, Besse & Jeannette Appleton came to dinner. At Mission I spoke of being too late. Several came forward. Joe says he will take responsibility of rent. Called on Mrs. Sweet. Mrs. McKinnon was there. Mary Porter told girls story of [vase].
Dorothy Hooker is to have an operation for Appendicitis tomorrow. I had a lovely note from her & called on her mother. Went to bed half sick with cold. Mary Porter talked to Outlook class today. Ours is to be [omitted]. Lena & I went to Mrs. Porters & met Henry Porters son Lucius.
Miss Mary Porter went away to Clifton. Dorothy Hooker's operation successful. I am miserable with a cold but managed to go to hear Boston Symphony. Miss Aus de Ohr played Tchaikowsky's Concerto. Orchestra under Ge played Beethoven's 5th Symp.

My cold is bad. College Club met here. Lena read Erich Arden & Mr. Story played the Strauss accompaniment. Edward's lesson (28) Mr. Porter gave me whisky.
Better this morning but tired by night. Did not go to hear Hopkinson Smith. Dr. Brown (2). He says I am in danger of breaking down. Mrs. Starr
Played for Miss Berensen 12.
Edward is in N.Y. so no lesson. My first pay treatment in Osteopathy. Came home to bed & I am to rest till Monday A.M. Millie & Louise decorated my room with handkerchiefs, medicine, [reading], etc.
Began "Ethel" J J Bell I staid in bed till after dinner then came down to write Bible lesson on board. Then I ate supper with family & retired early. I have written letters & read. Find it a long day. Wrote to Mr. Jump.
Read Tennyson Lady of Shalott, 2 Voices, Oenone, Dream of Fair Women, Morte d Arthur, Locksley Hall, etc.
Went down town & called on Joe. He evidently wants me to keep on begging money. What shall I do? Rather a hard day.
Mrs. Starr Miss Platt Very much better. Rec'd violets from Frieda Powers & carnations from Helen Harris.
January, THURSDAY 26. 1905.
? Mr. Story I went to library with Dorothea Boynton. Feel better.
Did not go to church.
Began Browning Study Programms Read "How they Brought Good News"
2nd Osteopathy. Called on Father St. John. Edward 1 hrs. 28 1/3.
Smith Church. Mission.
Mother walked to church for last time.
Mother went to Dr. Stearns for last time.
Outlook class. Discussed Japan. Miss Platt.
Osteopathy. Miss Robeson wouldn't take pay. I called on St. John & heard his story. He gave me Kibbe's chocolate. Called on Mrs. Weeks. Millie & I went to 1st Church Dickens entertainment.
Mother fell in getting up & called Frank, seemed chilled. Frank Sharpe pronounced it Grippe.
Edward (29 2/3) 1 hr lesson. Not well enough for a treatment. At about 4.30 I rec'd a telegram from Will. "Grandma Raymond just had pneumonia. Perhaps you had better come." I reached home before midnight. Frank who met me encouraged me, but I find her very ill. Temperature is 105. Miss Seaman & Johnson are here.
Mother's temperature went down to 100. I went to Church & heard Dr. Cuyler. Acts 27:29. I telephoned Miss Porter from Franks. Mother's fever up.
Mother seems better, but Frank thinks it doubtful whether her strength will hold out. I did shopping. This evening Frank almost gives up hope.
February, TUESDAY 7. 1905. Franks says "Your mother is a wonderful woman" We are very hopeful. About now the change came. She seemed to know us but, when asked whether she wanted anything said "No".
She follows us with [her] eyes until the expression left them. She does not suffer at all. At ten, without a struggle she fell asleep.
Flowers, letters, telegrams, calls. I love to stay in the quiet room.
Mr. Story Miss Platt Beautiful services. Mrs. Webb came.
Mr. Jacobs sang "Sleep on beloved". Mr. Case read Rev. 21 & 22. Mr. Jacobs "No night there". Ros Raymond beautiful tribute. Mr. Case prayed. We sang "Shining Shore". Laid dear Mother close to Father.
I came home to "The Elves" found Mother's picture framed by Lena & flowers from Louise, Millie, Marion, Miss Platt & Cicero class. I have told them all.
Staid in bed till 10.30. Then took treatment of Miss Robeson. No change. Amy Gillette Olney came to dinner. She wants to adopt her brother-in law's baby. I talked with Mrs. Packard, wrote to Minnie & took supper with Mrs. Porter.
School today & all seems like a dream. Louise attended to Outlook class for me. Call from Mr. Hahn.
Quantities of letters. Took my osteopathy & called on Mrs. Griffith. James was there. Called on Joe. Rec'd calls from Mrs. Sweet & Miss Hastings.
Mrs. Starr. Mr. Story. I went to prayer-meeting.
Dr. Moxom Revelation, Evangelization, Civilization. Dr. Harper has internal cancer. At Mission I talked about Heb. 12:1-11. Called on Mrs. Sweet. This evening I wrote to Malcolm Hughes.
Took Marie Seaman to Brighams to have dress fitted. Wrote letters. Bertha very ill with [pleurisi] pleurisy & [pneumonia].
Miss Platt. Miss Porter & Lena took all but Alice Haugan, June & Marion to Richard [Booth] College Club lecture in Drama. Bertha holding her own, but her lungs may be affected.
Mr. Story. Mrs. Berensen. I went to prayer-meeting & in to the Sweets. Mabel Cohn & Albert Tapley are engaged. Sadie Parsons husband has brain trouble.

Bertha is worse. They called in Dr. Butler & he advised cupping. She has nine chances in ten of living but I fear cannot work. She said "how nice" when told I would give her Mother $25. Girls had an old fashioned [donation] party & supper.
Bertha is some better. She wishes I was there to play. I played for Miss Berensen, read Outlook & wrote letters. Called on Mrs. Porter & Josie. Wrote long letter to Mrs. Harrington.

Dr. Moxom "Insufficiency of Religious Toleration" Luke 9:50. Good meeting Juo 3:1-16. "The New Birth" Mr. converted. Says he will speak to his Mother. Deacon Chapin there. I took Miss Boynton to train. Wrote to Mrs. Griffin & Dr. Clarke.
Blood vessel broken in my eye. Went to Dr. [Prefontaine] who said Read but little & in 48 hrs bathe in hot water. [Changed] [meeting]. Outlook class. Dr. Moxom called on me & he staid to [dinner]. Arranged Outlook list with Mrs. Porter.
Louise Bartlett ill.
Estelle Platt. Letters from Dr. Lathrop, Lou Dickerson, & Minnie. Bertha is better. Outlook class. We talked about Dean Briggs Routine & Ideals. Louise Bartlett ill.
Ash Wednseday. I met Miss Leonard at library. She expects to start Mission. I took her to get ice-cream. I had washed at Mrs. Whitings. Shopping. Supper with the Sweets. Fred Reeve says his wife has had a baby daughter & may die.
Mrs. Starr. Mr. Story. Bertha continues to improve. I went to prayer-meeting.
Miss Berensen did not come but Miss McClellan came to take pictures. I went to [c...] & shopping. My little [diamond] is fixed.
P.M. I read. Then I took girls to Lenten talk of Dr. Moxom on religion. Lent begins next [Wed].
Mrs. Packard sat with me at Communion. Mr. Hahn is certainly writing poor sermons. Very small Mission. Mr. Francis says he is going to join the Church. Went in to see Mrs. Bartlett.
March, TUESDAY 7. 1905. This is Father's 91st birthday. Miss Platt.
Took a treatment but Miss Robison changed [nothing]. Did shopping in a pouring rain. Took tea with the Hubbells & Dr. Price. Said what I thought about Dr. Hahn.

Great term because Gertrude Dodge is failing in her exams. Girls studied tonight.
Miss Berensen. All but Alice Haugan, Gertrude Dodge & June & Marion went to basket ball at Sweets. I took June down town. Read "Americana" most all day.
Dr. Moxom II Cor. 5:9. Xn Endeavor. Lena thought the girls behaved badly in Church. Miss Porter found Marie Seaman & Edythe talking to Gertrude for Minister. Music. Slavery of Sin - Rom. VII 14-25. II Peter 2:19. I have written letters all day. Called on Mrs. Sweet but she was sick with Grippe.
Gertrude Dodge & Miss Porter have kind of grippe. Millie & Louise took girls to Gadski & Damnsch recital. Mrs. Packard went & June, Marion, & Gertrude Dodge stayed home. Letter from Aunt Susan.
Ida Eastman seems sick. Miss Platt.
I took my treatment. Called on [father] St. John. Went down town and then went for dinner to Cousin Ella Griffiths at Mrs. Philbricks. Met Mr. Sheffield. James & Harold were there. Harold saw me to the car. Miss Porter is ill.
Mrs. Starr. Mr. Story. Good prayer-meeting. Called on the Hastings. Miss Porter almost has pneumonia.
Miss Porter has a nurse. Louise Bartlett & Marion Maltice coming down with kind of grippe. Several day pupils absent. Ruth & June [Neuten] gave a swap party. Miss Carroll is Miss P's nurse.
No gyms. Miss Porter better. Louise sick with both her troubles. I spent a great deal of time telephoning about postponed Outlook. Alice Haugan & Gertrude Dodge passed their Chemistry.
P.M. Raining. I took treatment & went to see Miss Leonard in her new home 23 Kenwood Park. Mrs. McDermott there. Eve. Read.
A.M. Dr. Moxom. Pillar & Ground of Truth II Tim. 2:19. I Tim. 3:15. Before Church I went up to see Annie Green & Catharine [Blunt]. Louise Bartlett hurts my feelings my saying I tell things, Is she getting "bossy"? At Mission Joe St. John appeared. I talked on cutting loose from bad company. Millie had head ache so I walked.
I had to go to Boston Symphony because Louise did not feel like it it. Millie went too. They played Schubert's 7th Symphony. Mrs. Richardson is failing.
March, TUESDAY 28. 1905. Miss Porter is beginning to have some classes. Miss Platt.
Osteopathy. Went to take "Kitty Morse" poetry to Mrs. Schenck. She was out & I visited with Miss Billings (Somerville) & Mr. Schenck till she came. They kept me to tea [berries] told about Dr. Moxom not buying books there.

Mr. Story. Mrs. Starr. Miss Carroll left. Mrs. Richardson is better. Mr. Baldwin was at meeting, spoke well. Mr. [Bugbee] walked home with me. Fred Reeves writes Minnie that doctor thinks his wife must be life long invalid.

The girls went to park with Louise. Evening played card. Telegram that Alice Haugan is to go to Chicago meet [Helgar] & go to Hot Springs.
Alice left today. Her mother is very ill. I called to see Gladys Reed & Eliz. Clarke about Proposal. Shopped.
P.M. Osteopathy. Walked with girls. Dr. Moxom on Religion & Social life. Evening. Read Outlook. [...] [This] A.M. Girls [hid] [...]. Miss McClellan came to take pictures.

Mr. Hahn Mark 10:32. Prof. McGregory was in Church & came home with me. Mrs. Packard seems miserable. At Mission we had a drunken man etc. Met Smith on the street & he asked about Hazel Shipman. Miss Porter has been in her room. Young man was in Mission. Said I had called him pudding.
Last evening Outlook Class. Talked about Am. Brand. Miss Platt.
Osteopathy. Did a little shopping & came home.
Mrs. Starr. Mr. Story did not come as his father is dying. Bapt. City Mission. Fine address by Dr. Chivers. Met Dr. Weeks. Mrs. Bowers died from her [fever].
Alice Haugan wrote of her Mother's death. Mrs. Packard ill. They have telephoned Mrs. Webb. Cameron came to get more money. I refused. I wrote letters this evening & girls played cards.
Mrs. Packard is worse today. She has come upstairs. Mrs. Webb came this afternoon. Osteopathy at 10.30. Mrs. Lawton began treatment yesterday. I went down town. Sad letter from Fannie Bates. The girls gave me sweet peas & Dorothea gave me a lily, 2 oranges and a banana. Darned stockings all the evening. Louise & Millie were in my room.
Dr. Moxom. [Silence] of God. In Mission I talked on [Christian] [Love] 2 Cor. XII & XIII (Selections) Smith appeared again. Called on Mrs. Sweet. Mrs. Porter called me in to tell me she has attacked Nellie Webb.
Mrs. Packard still very ill. Mother & I went to hear Sydney [Gulich] on Russi-Jap. War. Fine.
Mrs. Packard very ill. Mrs. Porter's attack has made Mrs. Webb & Miss Porter about ill. Miss Platts pupils gave a little musicale. Miss Platt.
16th treatment. Came home & packed. Miss P. talked to me about Mrs. P. & Nellie Webb. Miss Carroll thinks Mrs. Packard very ill.
Finished Bleak House to the girls.
I guess Mrs. Packard has pneumonia.
A blast from Ida Seymour. Last night a horse fell backward on Grace Goodhue.

Gladys Reed met me & she took tea at Miss Woods. Mrs. Kendrick is ill, invite me to a meal tomorrow. Gladys says Ida Seymour is very disloyal to "The Elm". We talked about girls not changing rooms.
Breakfast with Miss Wood. Walked round the lake & through the glen. Saw Miss Freeman, Mary [Wilde's] daughter, Dr. [Cooley], & Katharine Blunt. Katharine Blunt came with me to Gladys room & to Miss Wood. Katharine has Babbitt Scholarship.
Gladys took me driving. I called on Prof. Podgowski, Ellen Maher & Tom Mark. Mrs. [Ballard] came tonight. Calls from Eliz. Clarke & Eliza Buffington.
Gladys came to church with me. Pres. [Benj.] Andrews preached a queer sermon on [Za...]. Miss Wylie, Miss Buck & Gladys came to dinner. Calls from Miss Whitney, Miss Freeman, Miss Rowe. Called on Mrs. Van Ingen & the Dwights. Heard a letter from [Marchimers] [O...] about self & Mrs. [U...]. Called on Mrs. Taylor & Miss Whitney. Maggie Mark came back with me.
Miss Wood & I came down on Morning train. Gladys & Eliz. came to see me in bed. Call from Susie Raymond. Ora Kinney came to luncheon. Winifred brought Harriet & H. spent the night.
Ruth met me & we went to Mrs. Cooper's 550 Willoughby Ave. Came home & Ruth & I looked over Mother's clothes. Took Luncheon at Susie & Sallie's, Minnie, Bertha, Ruth, Ruth Raymond & Susie [Mercier]. Then Sallie took me to [Burton] Holmes illustrated lecture on Japan.
Minnie & I took luncheon with Mrs. Orten & Susie. Then I went to Raritan to visit Mr. & Mrs. Higgins, Helen (12), Ruth (9), Lloyd (6), Lawrence (3). Mr. Stringer came to tea.
Took pieces to Mrs. Cooper. Went to ask Kom to fix dress. Met Ruth & shopped.
P.M. called on Mrs. [Gibson] (out). Eve. Read aloud "Vesty of the Basins". Sadie Jones called this afternoon. Will came from Hamilton tonight.
Easter Message to Honest Doubter. Discouraged. Sorrowful. Good sermon by Dr. McAfee. Mary Sharpe called. She thinks Mrs. Richardson can't last long. The [Dobsons] with Della Dobson came to dinner. I went down to call on the Raymond's & found that Clara Kelsey Howard died yesterday. We went to prayers & I took tea at the Raymonds. Went to church with Susie. Dr. Hillis preached on Why God tells us little of Future Life.
Nellie Baker, Della Dobson & Winifred came to lunch. Before that I did packing. Minnie & I went to Clara Howard's funeral conducted by Dr. Hillis & Cousin Ros. Solo - "Light in Darkness". We all sang. Jesus Lover of my Soul, Shining Shore, Nearer my God to Thee. Clara looked like a beautiful queen. Her dress & casket were purple & there were quantities of America Beauty Roses. I went to Kom's.
Winnie, Bertha, & I took luncheon in Glen. [R...] [M...] home is almost finished. I gave her the lily of the valley pin. Had my first & last fitting of crepe de chine with Mrs. Cooper. Dudley Lewis Brought his autographs. Russell & Ruth came in late & saw them.
I packed all A.M. Took 12 oclock train. Lunch in dining car. Edythe [Se...] in parlor car. Stopped to see Joe, Mr. Lewis, Brighams, [Library]. Mrs. Webb went to N.Y.
School opened. Mrs. Starr didn't come.
Mr. Story. Went to see Emma Holbrook about tickets. She played on organ. Alice Haugan is back. Prayer-meeting. I spoke & Joe called out "You're good". Went in to Mrs. Sweets.
Began Hard Times to the girls.
Every girl went to College Play. I kept home. Have decided to take two rooms at Hamilton. Ruth Raymond offers to share [expense] for two weeks. Eve. Girls played cards & I wrote to Malcolm Hughes. Lena is sick. I showed Mother's embroideries to Lena, Miss Carroll & Miss [Wetheridge].
A.M. Finished unpacking. Packed away [...] things. Arranged my books.
P.M. Went down town. Helped Alice Haugan make up lab. work. Eve. Read Outlook & Browning in my room. Henry Taylor & Mary [Masin] are engaged.
Began Passing of Thomas etc.
Dr. Moxom Juo 14:1. Slept. Wrote letters. At Mission I talked on Eph 3:14-21. Baldwin has been drinking. I called on the Rubinsteins. Mr. R. talked about Russia. Wrote to Dr. Lathrop etc. Show Mothers embroideries to Mrs. Packard & Webb.
Miss Platt. Mrs. Johnson sends picture of husband & Henry Jr.
Called on Mrs. Bowman (saw only Miss B), Mrs. Henry Johnson & took tea with Miss Akers at Miss Leonard's. We must lose our mission [holding] as Mr. Harmon can read for $30.

Mr. Story. Analysis. I scold girls for thier giggling. After prayer-meeting I went to Sweets. Mrs. Starr. Police got woman drunk or a fit on High St.
Winnie is 55 today. She writes that Harriet asks where the doggies water closet is. Lena, Louise & Millie took girls to the Baggs woods. I tutored Helen Harris for an hour. In the evening I played games with the children. Clarence Smith's wife is dead. I took him a note. She leaves them children.
Spent morning doing Geometry & puttering about.

Osteopathy. Shopping. Eve. Louise, Mrs. Webb & I went to hear Henry James on Lessons from Balzac. I never heard such words. It was at Smith College. Saw Ida [Tartell].

Dr. Hahn 2 Cor. 7:9. Communion. Joe absent.

At mission I talked on I Juo. 3:1-3. Meg Clarke came to supper & I saw her home.


I went to [Steele] about renting his [stove]. He charges $15. Mr. Francis & I encouraged Joe. He says I am the best woman God ever made.
Miss Platt was ill so did not come today. This afternoon I taught Latin first to Helen Harris & Gertrude Dodge, then to [Had] Lester Harris & that with Chem. Kept me teaching from 3.30 to 6.

P.M. Osteopathy. Mr. Story gave some of his lessons today. Called on Joe who had decided to give up mission(!) but I guess won't. He is evidently gray with jealosy of Miss Leonard. Eve. I went with Mrs. Carmichael to Rehearsal.

Spent a good deal of time today reading Chemistry & doing some experiments. Osteopathy (21) at 11.30. Miss Robison talked to me about the Prof. [Turnbull] Copper Mine in Arizona. Ruth & June [Newton's] father came for the day.
I heard Dr. Weeks for the first time. He preached on Faith. Matt. 15:28. Discovery of Faith. The [marvelous] faith is not that [wh.] works miracles but that [wh.] holds on in times of testing. Description of Faith. Humility (not [belittling] one self). The woman said If I am a dog I want you for a master. The woman had three testings. Opposition of disciples, [Silence] of Jesus, His [answer]. A man kept a draft in [Pairs] [framed]. So [we] [hung] [texts] on [wall], & don't cash checks. Called on Miss Emerson. She has consulted Dr. Harper's [pl...]. Very small Mission. Then we went to Harold Rubensteins birthday party.
Miss Platt. Mabel Tales sent me $1.00 for Joe's Mission. Minnie is [horrified] at the Copper mines. I began tutoring Freida [Power] in Geometry. Taught Florence Lane Lat. for about 1 hr. So tired that I went out to drug store etc. Mrs. Packard had an operation on a gland.
Eventful day. A letter from Ruth said she would stay in Ham. "two weeks any how". Does that mean whether Ralph does or not, or ten weeks perhaps more. Miss Robison has [ordered] me to say I'll take 20 shares at 9.25 & next year she says she is willing to take 10 of these off my hands! I found Joe all settled & I called on Mr. Steele. He is a talker. Shopped. Rode to Thompsonville & took supper at Mrs. [Gagers]. [Vernor] Schuck started for two weeks trip to Oregon. Millie Hoyt sister left without my seeing her. This afternoon I went to see Miss Robison. I have decided to take 20 shares at 9 1/4. Then I went out to Baggs Woods to have supper with the girls. Mrs. Packard is in such pain from her face that they have sent for Mrs. Webb. Ruth Coe Pearson writes of her husband's death from Spotted fever. I tutored Freida Powers 1/2 hr.
Letters from Prof. Dwight & Mr. Cheney scared me out of investing in the [Treadwell]. Minnie writes saying Use $100 if you wish. I have written to Prof. Dwight that I will take some Continental if I can get some. I tutored Helen Harris and Gertrude Dodge 1 hr. Dorothea Boynton gave me sweet peas. Mrs. Webb came. Call from Mabel Bateman.

Dr. Moxom Juo 15:14. Ethics of Patriotism. Only about 8 at the Mission. My first meeting in new place. Miss Leonard came & gave me a dollar. I called on the Sweets.
We are talking about not having Dorothea Boynton return. Gertrude Besse & Stanley King are engaged. Russia fleet annihilated.
Decoration Day. Miss Platt. Tutored Frieda 1/2 hr. " Helen Harris 1/2 hr. Letters from Ros against [Treadwell]. Letter from Ben Dwight urging me to invest $1000. I wrote again. I would send $100. Mrs. R's sore shows in her cheek. Great moral defeat before [he's] beaten. Mothers crepe de chine came today. Ruth has made it for me.
Hard day. Went all over drumming up people to come to meeting Sunday. Then to Dr. Weeks who must leave to go to Mr. Reed's meeting at 3.30. Back after dinner to Joe & we are to have it any way.
Prayer-meeting. Sent $100 for 10 shares of Continental stock.
We went up to Mt. Holyoke for the night. Louise Bartlett & Millie Hoyt did not go. I met Italian bellboy who is studying at French Protestant College.
Wrote to Minnie & Jennie Hughes & sent cards. Sat out [doors] reading [Ra...]. Coming home we drove through Hadley to Holyoke.
Mr. Hahn I Peter 5:7. Beautiful sermon. Does God Care? I walked to cemetery with Mrs. Sweet. Read [Ce...] of Continental Stock & Ella Tanner's cards. Dr. Weeks spoke on "Under his Wings Shall I [trust]". Staid from 3 to 3.30. About 26 present. Stopped at Mrs. Hoookers & Mrs. Sweets.

Bertha & I left on the 8.15 train. At Utica we took trolley for Clinton. Bertha was cold & I started up on hill but did not quite reach colleges. Arrived in Hamilton at 6.08. Martha met us. My room is so lovely!
Spent the day getting my room in order. Miss Raymond called. I am to help Daisy Chase get money for her quilt to take her to Silver Bay. Mrs. Hawkins & Mrs. Ead Partridge are expecting babies.

Saw Mrs. Estes & called on her. Calls from the Misses Rowe, Mrs. Payne, Minnie Hakley. I find that the library is to be opened afternoon. Malcolm and I walked up together.

I missed Mother today. I went to take money to Daisy Chase. Bertha & I called on the Hawkins & saw baby clothes. Then we went to train. Minnie, two Ruths, Winifred & Harriet came by boat. We all took dinner at the Harmons. Ruth Raymond is at the hotel. I went up to library & came down with Malcolm. This evening it poured & I was so blue. At last Minnie & Win came. Frank Richardson is 23. This is Mrs. Fred Raymond's 2nd anniversary.

P.M. 3 oclock. Communion. Eve. Mr. Raymond Liberty Rom. 8:21. Very rainy day. Sat in church with the Burchards. We all sat out after dinner & Mr. Raymond was there. Mr. Clare spoke in church of the [wedding] so that we would have Union prayer-meeting. I called on Miss Hastings but as she was taking a bath I visited with the Chases. Gave Mrs. McG. a bath tonight.
Ruth & I went to Min's & to Mrs. Raymond's. Ralph came at 1.25 & Frank at 5.22. We all with Mrs. McG. went to Minnies & Mrs. Bostick & Margery. Lena caught her arm in the [wringer] & Frank did it up. Sat out with Bennetts & ate [Marnny's] pop corn. Mrs. Kilburn thinks they expect me in Eaton! Raymond Morse called. In library Malcolm brought me [Metterlinck] Maeterlinck & we visited.

P.M. I took Mrs. McG. to the station & we met Russell & Prof. McG. at 6.08. The rehearsal was in the afternoon. Then went to the library. Malcolm came & talked with me. Eve. We all went to the Richardson's. I went to Union prayer meeting.

P.M. We went to canning factory & Haze Jones showed us around. I took Russell up the hill & to library. Wedding at 8. Frank was best man. Ruth maid of honor, Bertha, Alice Burnham, Florence Brownell & May [Grosmer] some bridesmaids. Russell, Ralph, Henry Throop & Wayne [R...] ushers. Small reception. They showered them with rose leaves & rice. Martha kissed her parents & they drove to Earlville for the night. Mr. Harmon did not break down. I want my mother!
We hear from Will & Martha. They spent the night at Earlville, then started for Lake George. This morning Russell went away. We walked with Prof. McG to the Richardsons. P.M. Harvey gave me my papers. I went to library & Malcolm was with me most of the time bringing me things about Mary Stuart. I sat at dinner with Prof. Stuart. Calls this evening. I called on Miss Hastings.

Commander & Wm. Eaton, Ralph, Ruth & I went to a place near Fiddlers Green for orchids. Waded right in. Malcolm Hughes spoke in prayer-meeting.
Packed. Went to library. It is changed to morning! Malcolm walked home with me. My birthday present is to be electric lights.
A.M. Electric lights were put in this A.M. I left on the 10.38 train. Reached Utica at 11.45. On the train I visited with Dell Rice and we talked about his saloon! He seemed to have no conscience. Got table d'he dinner at Utica (poor). Left Utica at 1.15 via Richland & reached Watertown about 30 mins. after 4.25. It is lovely here. Mary let milk pitcher fly, at Mr. Cramer. Mr. Cramer speaking of Gertrude seemed to wake Mr. Wilkinson up. Mr. Bond went to Northampton tonight.
This morning I had a nice talk on theology with Mr. Wilkinson. Wrote. Mary & I went down town. Left at 1.22. Mary & Mabel, Mr. Cramer & Mr. Bond saw me to the train. Lost ticket. Took Mr. Bonds [...] to Utica. Read Beautiful Coquette over girls shoulder. Found electric lights ready for use.

I rec'd a letter from Dr. Clarke about Mr. Wilkinson, Mrs. Houghton's Telling Bible Stories etc. At Mission Mr. Loomis came. He has been good this week. Mr. Chapin came. I spoke on [Zach] 3. I called on Josie Bartlett. She thinks her mother will die. Wrote Gertrude White.
Mrs. Starr (8) Minnie writes that Mrs. Richardson has had a fall. Louise & I went down town to try and get me a hat. We may decide on Mrs. Davis's $15 hat.
This afternoon I mended the bottom of my silk dress & then went with Louise down to Brighams. I think they will make me a hat with a breast for 10.30. It is to be sent on approval. Miss Platt. November, THURSDAY 2. 1905. Mr. Story 7 Annual meeting at State St. Church. Large gathering. No drawing.
Mr. Haugan & Helgar came. Girls celebrated Halloween. Dressed as ghosts at dinner. Later I told fortunes in the cellar. Came up to library, ghost stories, marshmallows, peanuts, apples, cider, doughnuts.
Miss Berenger began gyms & dancing & I played.
P.M. Went down town head shampooed. Girls rehearsal play.

Mr. Story (10). In prayer-meeting they talked a good deal finally appointing a committee of 15 to discuss with 1st Church Committee. Louise Bartlett & Millie Hoyt took dinner with Mrs. Knowlton. I declined because of prayer-meeting. Mrs. Remnitz came today. Girls rehearsed play.
November, FRIDAY 24. 1905. Major Brewster whose wife died in Feb. is engaged to Mrs. . I worked afternoon & evening over Phy. Geog. papers. 6 failed Marion among them.

Marion gave a birthday party to the house girls & the Tennyson class. We came as books. I was "All's Well that Ends Well".
No gyms as the opening from the new home was made with the school. I went down town for Christmas shopping. Millie & Louise went to Rose Dutton's luncheon. Alice had two Smith girls to lunch. I chaperoned them to Barr's tea room & to train. Miss Porter & I went to Mrs. Bartletts & I went up to see her.
Dr. Moxom Eph 5:12. I stopped at Mr. Hahn's. No meeting at Joes. We sent Handyside away & we had a long talk. Dear Mrs. Bartlett died at 6.50 tonight.
December, MONDAY 11. 1905. I went down town & did considerable shopping. Sperry is arrested.

Mrs. Bartlett's funeral. Dr. Frank spoke beautifully. We went to Oak Grove. Coming home, Lena & I talked about Louise seeing so different. As I was reading in my room she came in & I tried to talk to her. This evening Mr. Bond, made his second call, from 8 to about 11. Mabel has twice refused him.
Alice Roosevelt's engagement to Nicholas Longworth announced.
Minnie writes that Mrs. Richardson died yesterday A.M. Beautiful prayer-meeting "Word of God". Sperry was there & got up & said a man from a mission put him in jail! I took Joe home. Anna Grigg is dead.
