rape jokes

Abstract
Through a close analysis of rape jokes from mainstream American comedy, my thesis focuses on the ways women comedians utilize humor as a possible tool to challenge rape culture. To ground my inquiry, I look closely at the content, the performance, and the reception of rape jokes made by comedians like Amy Schumer, Hannibal Buress, Daniel Tosh, Louis C.K., and Margaret Cho. My thesis does not just look at the context of the debate–the nature of the jokes–but also at the emergence of a certain kind of entanglement of critique. Rather than focusing on what makes a "good" or "bad" joke, I highlight the ways in which performances and the receptions to performances reveal hegemonic constructions within comedy. The jokes become representative of a larger silence and emerging discourse surrounding rape culture. They explore deep-seated cultural anxieties about why women comedians are making the news today. The jokes reveal the discomfort around women comedians, rape culture, and anxiety about what it means when a woman comedian starts telling jokes at the expense of the patriarchy.

Diversity in American advertising: a case study of Coca-Cola advertisements and their role in homogenizing the diversity movement

Abstract
Through a historical study of advertising, this project aims to show how the idea of "diversity" is used by corporations to benefit the dominant hegemonic, and ultimately attempt to homogenize the diverse populations that they supposedly are highlighting. Analyzing the growth of the advertising industry and considering socio-political movements, this project traces how advertisers have represented minority populations, and how these representations have changed through the years. Coca-Cola is used as a case study in this project due to its global scope, but more importantly because its ads have been lauded for carrying positive messages. Specific Coca-Cola advertisements from different time periods are used to further illustrate the path through which the idea of using minorities to show diversity was taken. Hopefully this project will serve to complicate the idea of diversity, and help illustrate how representation (specifically, representation controlled by the dominant hegemonic) is not necessarily as beneficial for minorities as often assumed it is.

moss green velvet tablecloth

Abstract
A mostly-stock-footage video essay that explores the relationship between a person and their traces / the work imagines an "I" and a "you" as they think through the fictions of memory and interpersonal boundary, through the impulse to create and the resulting creation. It settles into the places where consciousness overlaps, hoping, maybe, to make bridges of individuated experience.
